In recent years, a waitlisted decision is more like a rejection. Competition has just become a lot tougher and admissions offices only hand out a waiting list to assure themselves of back-up enrollment. Top schools such as Cornell and Princeton may accept only a handful or even none of those in the waiting list. They want to retain the feeling of exclusivity. So, is it time to look elsewhere?

college applications essay and overall resume, you may not have much of a chance if you are waitlisted and looking for financial aid. Recent trends show that many colleges are need-blind and may more likely accept students who don’t need financial aid as much.
Focus on schools that accepted you.
Look at the colleges that handed you acceptance letters readily. If one of them turns out to be a fit then maybe it is time to ditch the college that gave you the waiting list decision.
