Mississippi State University is a land-grant university located in the east-central Mississippi. It is one of the largest universities in the state of Mississippi with its enrollment of more than 18,000.
Mississippi State University was first established as Agricultural and Mechanical College of the State of Mississippi in 1878 to offer training in agriculture and mechanical arts. In 1932, the university was renamed to Mississippi State College. It was only in 1958 that the name was changed to Mississippi State University.

The colleges include the College of Architecture Art and Design, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, College of Business, College of Arts and Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Shackouls Honors College, College of Forest Resources, Richard C. Adkerson School of Accountancy, James Worth Bagley College of Engineering, College of Education, Dave C. Swalm School of Chemical Engineering. Aside from the graduate and undergraduate programs, the university offers special programs such as the Academic Certificate Program and Distance Learning Program.

Mississippi State University is home to many great athletes. There are many NFL players who came from this academic institution. They include Floyd Womack (OT Seattle Seahawks), D.D. Lewis (LB Dallas Cowboys), and Kent Hull (C Buffalo Bills), among many others. The famous authors John Grisham, Matthew F. Jones, and Greg Keyes are also among the alumni who brought pride to Mississippi State University.
Rankings and reviews
Forbes magazine ranked Mississippi State University as number 18 in America’s Best College Buys. In 2009, it was ranked 46th by Forbes for top public universities in the state. MSU is also home to many scholars.
