Old Dominion University is a research university located in Norfolk Virginia, USA. Old Dominion University or ODU was established as the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary in 1930. This academic institution became a college in 1962 and obtained its university status in 1969. The university is one of the leading academic institutions not just in Virginia but also across the nation.
Old Dominion University’s name was taken from the state’s nickname The Old Dominion. The nickname was given by King Charles II of England for the state’s loyalty to the crown during the time of the English civil war.

The College Guide of Washington Monthly Magazine ranks Old Dominion University the number 120 among the 242 major colleges and universities. The National Science Foundation, on the other hand, ranks 18 of Old Dominion University’s programs among the top 100 of the respective national peers in terms of R&D expenditures. It was 79th in the ranking of DOD research, and number 51 in NASA research. Old Dominion University was named by Princeton Review as the Best Southeastern College.
